The link that’s making the rounds in WhatsApp groups, saying that Bank of Africa in Uganda is giving out money as gifts as part of a promotion, is a complete hoax.
How the Scam works:
When a user opens the link, a page with modified Bank of Africa logo appears. The text on the page states that visitors have a chance to win Ugx 1 Million.
Respondents are asked to select their age range, gender, level of knowledge about the bank, and rating from a drop-down menu to stand a chance to win the cash.
A congratulations message stating that the respondent has won is displayed but before getting the money, the respondent is requested to forward the same link to other WhatsApp users, promising that the cash reward will arrive within five to seven days.
Such procedure are very common with phishing schemes, which collect private information through false promises.
How to avoid such data phishing scams:
– Report such suspicious messages to the Bank authorities immediately.
– Be cautious of unsolicited messages claiming you’ve won a gifts or prizes.
– Verify such cash promotions by contacting the bank directly or visiting their official media platforms and website.
– Never click on suspicious links or share personal information.
