A recent scam has been making the rounds in Uganda, targeting unsuspecting individuals with the promise of free cash grants from President Yoweri Museveni. The scam, which has been circulating as a website link through social media and other digital platforms especially WhatsApp, targets the economic needs faced by many Ugandans, luring them with the false hope of financial assistance.
How the scam works:
The scam claims that President Museveni is providing cash grants to Ugandan citizens as part of a government initiative to alleviate poverty and support low-income individuals.
Victims are lured into the scam through a website link that is shared on different social media platforms. The victim is then lured into following the website link so that they can participate in the cash giveaway.
Upon clicking on the link, the victims are encouraged to fill in an online form and provide their personal information and sometimes are requested to pay a registration fee to receive the alleged cash grant.
However, upon providing all their personal information, they are told to share the same link with other 20 people or groups to qualify for the free cash and the cycle goes on all over again.
How to protect yourself from being scammed:
Exercise caution and skepticism when encountering such cash offers. One should always verify the authenticity of any government programs or financial assistance initiatives through official channels.
Avoid clicking/opening and sharing suspicious links. People should always avoid opening links that are suspicious because at most times they a phishing links that are aimed at collecting personal information for a user.
Do Not Share Personal Information: Never provide personal details, such as your bank account number, passwords, or phone numbers, through suspicious websites, platforms, or links or to unknown individuals.
