A recent scam has been circulating in Uganda, where fraudsters create fake Twitter accounts under names like “StanAirtel” and “StanAirtelUg” impersonating customer care agents from Airtel Uganda. The scammers deceive innocent customers into believing they are receiving genuine assistance with their accounts or services, only to trick them into revealing sensitive information like phone numbers and Airtel Money PIN codes.
These scammers at times use phone numbers 0744-119251 and 0702-899737 when carrying out their scams.
How the Scam Works:
The scam begins when a fake Twitter account, designed to resemble Airtel Uganda’s official customer care profile, contacts users who have posted complaints or inquiries about Airtel services.
The scammer then offers help, often promising quick solutions or free rewards like bonus data or airtime. Once trust is established, the scammer asks for sensitive information, such as phone number details, mobile money PINs, One-Time Passwords (OTPs), or even identity documents. The goal is to steal money or hijack the victim’s Airtel Money account.
How to Avoid Falling for the Scam:
- Verify Official Accounts: Always check for a blue verification checkmark next to the account name to confirm it’s legitimate.
- Never Share Personal Information: Do not provide sensitive details like your phone number, PIN, or OTP security codes via social media.
- Use Secure Channels: Contact Airtel Uganda’s customer care through their official website, app, or verified helplines.
- Report Suspicious Accounts: If you encounter a suspicious account, report it to Twitter and block it immediately.
Stay vigilant, and ensure you’re only communicating with verified channels to protect yourself from scams.
