Ugandans Cautioned Against Falling for Fake MTN Cash Giveaway Scam

A new data phishing scam is being carried out on social media, particularly on WhatsApp, and it disguises as an “MTN Random Giveaway” promotion.

How the scam works

Multiple individuals are sharing a link in WhatsApp groups, promising lucky Ugandan MTN users cash prizes. Upon clicking the link, a page stating that MTN has started offering random cash giveaways starting at Ugx 293,394 as prizes to lucky individuals who complete a quick survey and spin the lottery wheel will display.

Upon initial click, the participant is presented with messages purportedly from past winners. One receives a notification congratulating them on being eligible to participate in the lottery after responding to the quiz, which asks whether they have an MTN subscription and provides their phone number and email address.

The specifics of how to claim the reward are not disclosed to the participants. Rather, they are requested to forward the link to other WhatsApp users as they wait for their reward. This technique is a phishing scam, in which victims provide personal information only to have it stolen and never receive the promised benefits.

How to avoid such scams

– Be cautious of unsolicited messages claiming you’ve won a prize

– Verify messages by contacting MTN directly

– Never click on suspicious links or share personal information

– Don’t respond to messages that create a sense of urgency

– Report suspicious messages to MTN’s customer care

Conclusion

To prevent data phishing scams like these, keep in mind that MTN would never launch a promotion without first notifying the public. You should also always avoid clicking on suspicious rewards or promotional links.
